Dear Friends,

I’ve got a lot to update you on my work to keep kids safe online. As you know, I’ve introduced legislation to help keep children safe online and prevent dangerous health consequences of addictive social media platforms. My Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act and the New York Child Data Protection Act will protect children online by limiting addictive features of social media platforms that are known to harm their mental health and development, and prohibiting online platforms from collecting and sharing their personal data.

Last week I was in Austin, Texas for SXSW to discuss my bills to keep kids safe online. I was joined by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, law professor Zephyr Teachout and technologist Joe Toscano for an important discussion.

I’ve always said that winning the fight to enact these measures into law would not be easy. Big Tech has been spreading lies about what these bills do because they don’t want anything to get in the way of their profit-making. Just last week, the Albany Times Union reported the lengths Big Tech is going to misrepresent the legislation.

I’m geared up for this fight because I know we are on the right side of trying to protect young people. This Friday, alongside our partners in this fight, we’re hosting a press conference outside of Meta Headquarters to say enough is enough. Interested in joining? The scary truth is that social media can be just as harmful and addictive as tobacco. It’s imperative that we put safeguards in place to protect our youth from the harms caused by social media and the Big Tech behemoths who make billions and billions of dollars keeping our eyes - and the eyes of our children - glued to their apps.

We only have a few days left to get this done in the budget and I’ll need your support.

In solidarity,

Andrew
