Florida black bears are among the most docile of all bears. They're vegetarians and can be scared off by pets.
Now officials in Florida have passed a bill making it legal for people to kill these bears not just when they're afraid for themselves — that's already the law — but on behalf of their property. It can't stand.

Trophy hunters and anti-wildlife forces have taken a trigger-happy, shoot-first approach to a problem that's better solved with nonlethal methods.
The habit of seeing wildlife as pests to be exterminated won't fly anymore. Bears have a right to exist in the wild, free from the threat of getting shot.
The Center for Biological Diversity jumped into action to keep Florida's black bears safe.
We’re urging Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to veto the bill — and we helped organize a response from local groups opposing this bear slaughter on the ground.
Florida's bears are already struggling to survive as their homes get paved over and destroyed. The last thing these gentle animals need is people gunning them down just because they're sniffing at garbage or crossing a lawn.
The Center was founded because we believe all species great and small must be protected and given a chance to thrive in the wild.
Florida's attack on bears is a betrayal of our core belief: that wildlife is intrinsically worthy of life.
We'll do all we can to keep these beleaguered bears safe, just as we do every day for species in harm's way.
