Generation Equality Action Pack, March 2020

March has turned out to be a month in which the COVID-19 pandemic and its myriad impacts have been at the forefront of our thoughts. As we embrace a new reality in the months ahead, we wanted to still share a few Generation Equality updates that you might have missed: In early March, we marked International Women's Day as activists around the world celebrated the achievements of women and shared why they are Generation Equality. And, at the 64th Commission on the Status of Women, Member States adopted a Political Declaration, pledging to ramp up efforts to fully implement the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—a visionary blueprint on women’s rights adopted at Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. In the sidelines, UN Women released a comprehensive, stock-taking report, highlighting strides towards equality since its adoption 25 years ago as well as slow and uneven progress where efforts are still sorely needed.

What will push the needle closer to equality? Why do commitments remain unfulfilled? What are the priorities for the women of the world? Find out here. Get new stories and data, and delve into the many actions being taken across the world for Generation Equality.

Marking 25 years since the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action, this report takes an integrated approach to reporting on progress, gaps, and challenges related to the advancement of gender equality and women’s rights. It highlights that what’s needed now is a concerted drive to scale up, expand, and deepen policies and programmes that can accelerate the implementation of the entire Platform for Action for this generation and the next.

GENERATION EQUALITY FORUM UPDATE

We have all watched with concern the rapid increase in the number of people globally affected by COVID-19. In March, the World Health Organization characterized the outbreak as a pandemic and has called for a comprehensive, all-of-society strategy to prevent infections, save lives and minimize impact.

In light of the current global COVID-19 situation, the timelines of the convening of the Generation Equality Forum are being reviewed. The health and wellbeing of participants is our paramount concern and we continue to follow the recommendations of national and international public health authorities.
