Now that you are subscribing to PublicSource, I want to share with you three unique things about our newsroom.
1. We’re a nonprofit! We’re not beholden to a corporation or a single major owner, like most other media in town, but that means we must fundraise ([link removed][UNIQID]) for our operating budget every year. We’re very fortunate to have the support of several of Pittsburgh’s major foundations and some national foundations that support credible, trustworthy journalism. Beyond that, our revenue is a diverse mix of reader donations, event revenue and some corporate support. (Yes, we’ll be asking for your tax-deductible donations, just like PBS and NPR!) 2. We view journalism as a public service. Whether you are reading a Pittsburgher’s first-person essay or we’re holding our local government accountable, the end result is shining a light on the LOCAL - your neighborhood, city, and region. Our journalism makes Pittsburgh a better place to live. We use our resources wisely and won’t report on what others are already covering, unless the reporting isn’t deep enough or is missing an important angle.
3. The high quality of our journalism is our commitment. You’ve probably noticed we have only a handful of stories each week. Our pace is intentional so that we can research, interview and produce a compelling article that is rigorously fact-checked line-by-line and reviewed by a second person trained to interrogate claims and poke holes. The size of our reading audience is important to us, but we’re not going to be covering sports, traffic and weather to drive pageviews. Our goal is for each of our stories to contribute to making Pittsburgh a better city.
