But I want to tell you a story nobody else can. A story about women’s history already made and women’s history in the making.

My people don’t come from money, John – but the Martinezes have been speaking truth to power for generations. Everybody says I get that from my grandfather, who sent more letters to the Hagerstown newspaper’s editor than I could count.
But my grandmother is the one I’m thinking about today. For years, my grandmother worked cleaning the mayor of Hagerstown’s house – and now, just two generations later, I’m the mayor. How’s that for history?
My family is watching the fruits of our labor bloom in real time, and I know that where I am today is just the bud.
But here’s another history lesson families like mine have had to learn the hard way: There are zero guarantees. My grandmother was lucky to have that cleaning job, but she was never once offered a raise. Nobody fought for her.
Now, it’s my turn to fight – for the women like my grandmother. For the women like myself, who woke up at 1:30 this morning to serve my community. For the women whose stories get told, and the ones only their families will ever know. For all of us.
I’m ready to take our fight to Congress, but the system wasn’t built for the granddaughters of house cleaners to win.
