In this special edition of World10, Atlas Network showcases the

global response to COVID-19 from a few of our partners,

who are dealing with enormous challenges as we all face lockdowns,

social distancing, and—most importantly—government intervention

on an unprecedented scale.
“Socialism is the wrong response to a contagious disease,” writes Atlas Network CEO Brad Lips as he considers the urgent challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic presents to the freedom movement. “Emergency powers must not be the new normal after the emergency has passed. The cause of limited government and free markets has never been more important than now.”
Independence Institute is developing a list of ideas that will increase the effectiveness of the healthcare industry to continue to fight the virus and relieve some of the burden being put on workers and families currently impacted by the shuttered economy.

In response to the sudden challenges of working from a virtual office, Atlas Network is launching a series of webinars on fundraising tips, social media management, communications, and other online workshops to help our partners manage this new working environment. An updated list of webinars and other event information is available here.

Interventionist measures, such as price regulations on goods and services, might soothe a panicked public—but is the government doing more harm than good? Elena Leontjeva, who recently became president of Lithuanian Free Market Institute, discusses the crucial role that think tanks play in both the freedom movement as well as for countries around the world.

The Mercatus Center at George Mason University announced a series of prizes through its Emergent Ventures program for innovators working to combat COVID-19. Tyler Cowen, faculty director of the Mercatus Center and founder of Emergent Ventures, called the prizes “a way to incentivize innovation and help to repay those who work on this issue, as they are unlikely to receive anything close to the full social value of their efforts."

Cato Institute CEO Peter Goettler provides lawmakers with a roadmap on how to deal with the COVID-19 crisis. Goettler argues that removing red-tape in the medical sector will best equip us to defeat the virus. Cato's commentary and research on the evolving COVID-19 situation is available here.

In an op-ed for Atlas Network, Center for Indonesian Policy Studies (CIPS) Executive Director Rainer Heufers looks at the benefits of open trade as the best way to avoid food insecurity, particularly in a time of crisis.

“As often happens during emergencies, governors and mayors across the country have used executive power to waive laws and bypass regulations,” writes Charles Blain for FEE. On April 6th, FEE President Zilvinas "Z" Silenas will moderate an online panel of national and state-level free-market leaders to discuss how organizations are mobilizing to face the crisis.
"With an economy dependent on tourism, Hawaii’s dwindling cash reserves put the state at risk in an emergency. Grassroots Institute of Hawaii’s Joe Kent looks at the important takeaway lessons that lawmakers can use to help the state recover."
In a post on Epicenter’s blog, Emanuel Örtengren writes, “This is not the end of globalisation, but the beginning of a new chapter.” Örtengren makes the point that change is inevitable, but dispersing uncertainty is a global necessity.
