In my continued fight to address the gun violence epidemic in our state
and across the country, I took multiple actions this month to keep deadly
weapons out of the wrong hands.
Weapon parts kits and partially completed frames and receivers can be used
to make illegal firearms that lack a serial number, commonly known as
ghost guns. Ghost guns are firearms, and they need to be properly
regulated under federal law.
That’s why I joined a coalition urging the U.S. Supreme Court to review a
lower court decision on this issue. By failing to categorize and regulate
ghost guns as firearms, they can more easily fall into the hands of
children and criminals.
I also joined a nationwide coalition in support of Connecticut’s
restrictions on large-capacity magazines and assault weapons, which are
commonly used in mass shootings. We’ve banned these weapons of war here in
California, and we’ve seen how these kinds of commonsense safety measures
reduce the threat of gun violence.
Plus, I announced the results of our 2023 Armed and Prohibited Persons
System (APPS) report. This first-in-the-nation system was established in
2006 to identify and recover illegally possessed firearms from people who
shouldn’t have them, including those convicted of a felony or violent
misdemeanor, subject to a domestic violence or other restraining order, or
with severe mental illness.
Through this program, the Department of Justice seized 1,443 firearms,
including 88 ghost guns, and contacted more than 25,000 individuals — more
than ever before!
There is no single solution to prevent gun violence, which is why I’m
following the data and supporting a variety of commonsense gun reform
measures to prevent shootings and save lives.
