Red state Republicans’ refusal to expand Medicaid has led to the catastrophic closures of rural hospitals.
The constant drumbeat of attacks on reproductive health and abortion care – from the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade to countless state restrictions — has made it harder than it’s been in 50 years to receive reproductive health care.
They have all contributed to the United States being the only country among developed nations whose maternal mortality rate is RISING — and deaths among Black mothers and other women of color are disproportionately driving it up.
Black mothers are three to four times more likely than White mothers to die from pregnancy-related complications, and Indigenous mothers suffer the same disproportionate mortality rate.
My colleagues and I introduced the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act because we need to drastically reduce maternal mortality in the United States.
Our legislation would fund community-based organizations and grow and diversify the perinatal workforce — the health care workers that mothers rely on for care in the critical weeks immediately before and after birth.
