March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and I want to take this opportunity to reach out to you. As a public servant and a nurse, I’m committed to raising awareness about the importance of early screening and advocating for accessible healthcare for all Delawareans.

This is a cause that hits incredibly close to home for me. I lost my father, paternal grandfather, and my paternal grandmother to colon cancer. Just as my family has been deeply affected by colon cancer and other forms of cancer, I know that there are thousands of Delawareans who have had similar experiences – and may even be going through the treatment journey now.

Colon cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer when diagnosed early, yet it remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the United States. That means that we need to keep pushing for early detection!

Here in Delaware, we’re fortunate to have a wide range of resources available.

One such resource is Screening For Life, which funds cancer screening tests for qualified adults in the state. Additionally, I want to highlight the Delaware Cancer Treatment Program, which provides financial help for uninsured patients – you can call 1-844-245-9580 or 211 to apply.

This fight is one I’ve been in for a long time, John, because my calling is to care for others. As a State Senator, I sponsored a joint resolution to help ensure that 80% of eligible Delawareans were screened by 2018. As Lieutenant Governor, I’ve co-chaired the Cancer Risk Reduction Committee.

And as Delaware’s next Governor, I will continue to fight for the well-being of every Delawarean so that the First State is the best place to live, work, and raise a family.
