A middle school student in the Oakland Unified School District was asked by her teacher, Diana De Rueda, to complete a “Mock Campaign Project” assignment. Students were instructed to choose their ideal presidential candidate and explain the reasoning behind their choice.
The student chose Daily Wire commentator Candace Owens as her preferred candidate and included a fictional endorsement by Turning Point USA on her completed poster project.
When the assignment was submitted, De Rueda told the student to remove the fictional Turning Point USA endorsement because it promoted hate speech and racism. The student says the teacher also called her “racist” and “xenophobic” for her selections in the assignment.
The student shared photos of De Rueda’s classroom, which displays numerous biased posters, with the School Board Watchlist team. De Rueda’s selections include posters that say “Free Palestine” and “Defund the Police.”
