Imperial Brands and British American Tobacco (BAT) have announced deals for new credit but say the pandemic has had little material effect on business.

BAT said the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on their business has not been material but if the situation deteriorates or persists for an extended period in key geographies “the risk of a significant adverse impact to the BAT Group’s business will increase.”

It said the impact of the pandemic depended on a range of factors including reductions or volatility in consumer demand due to retail closures, travel restrictions or economic hardship.

Similarly, Imperial Brands said although the economic and social impact of the coronavirus pandemic is developing rapidly, “there has been no material impact on group performance to date” and current trading remains in line with expectations.

Cleveland police have called for a takeaway to have its licence reviewed over concerns of crime, disorder and public safety.

The calls come after police received a warrant to search the site in September last year, following community intelligence. Police arrested a male and recovered around £5,000 in cash along with thousands of pounds of illegal and smuggled cigarettes and tobacco.

The warrant in September was executed as part of Operation Sentinel, a regional operation to tackle serious and organised crime in conjunction with environmental health officers, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the Gangmasters Labour Abuse Authority.

Smokers are being warned to wake up to the deadly dangers of smoking when tired in a new Fire Kills campaign by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service. Cigarettes and other smoking products cause just over a third of all accidental fire fatalities in the home.

While people are currently staying home due to coronavirus, it is important to remember that smoking is the single most common source of ignition in accidental fire fatalities in the home, often due to factors such as smoking in bed or not taking care after drinking alcohol. When smokers fall asleep with a lit cigarette in hand, their proximity to the resulting fire seriously lowers their chance of making an escape.

That is why Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding smokers to ‘Put it Out, Right Out’ whenever they light up, to keep themselves and their families safe in their homes.

Head of the Service’s prevention department, Nick Evans, said: “On average, someone dies from a fire ignited by cigarettes or smoking materials every five days. Despite a fall in the overall number of fires caused by these products, it’s still the biggest cause of accidental fire fatalities in the home across the country. Every smoker should wake up to the risks they take every time they light up and drop the habit of smoking whilst in bed or under the influence of alcohol. The risk of falling asleep before you ‘put it out, right out’ is just too great.”
