As we reflect on the life and work of Cesar Chavez today, we can't help but be reminded of his words:

“History will judge societies and governments — and their institutions — not by how big they are or how well they serve the rich and the powerful, but by how effectively they respond to the needs of the poor and the helpless.”

Chavez spent his life advocating for the rights of farm workers, who now today are yet again facing tremendous hardships in the midst of a global pandemic. Farm workers and domestic workers, many of whom are immigrant laborers, are living paycheck to paycheck, anxious of deportation or becoming infected, many without sick leave or health insurance.

Here at CREDO, our partners and grantees in the immigrant, workers and civil rights movements are fighting hard in these difficult times to protect and advocate for the vulnerable workers among us. Groups like the National Domestic Workers Alliance, who are providing emergency assistance for domestic workers to enable them to stay home and healthy. Or the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, who are urgently advocating for local and national leaders to immediately adopt a plan for worker and migrant justice as part of the Coronavirus response.
