Happy Women’s History Month, Community!

Today, I’m taking stock of the incredible women, both in San Diego and throughout our shared history, who make the world we live in possible.

From local leaders like Senator-Elect Dr. Akilah Weber who are making waves this election season to trailblazers like Lynn Schenk, who was the first woman San Diegan elected to the U.S. House of Representatives over three decades ago — there’s a lot of progress to celebrate.

Our wins are felt collectively — we have persevered, overcome systemic barriers, and proved we belong and deserve a seat at the table.

But our losses are felt collectively too, and this year has not been easy.

We’ve witnessed the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision ravage the rights to healthcare choices for millions of women across the country. Meanwhile, women across San Diego County are making significantly less than their male counterparts, and crimes which disproportionately impact women, and particularly women of color, like domestic violence and human trafficking, remain a devastating threat to our Community.

Needless to say, there’s work to be done at every level.

As we celebrate the progress made, and honor those who risked their lives to make that progress possible, it befalls all of us to recognize that as San Diegans, we also have immense privilege in the fight for women’s rights. As women in progressive spaces, we must commit ourselves to standing up against injustice everywhere.

Today we celebrate. Tomorrow we put our heads down and continue the work of those who came before us.

In Solidarity,

Monica Montgomery Steppe
