In a country of 5.5 million people, accessing health care is all but impossible and life expectancy is little more than 54 years in the Central African Republic (CAR). Less than half of the country's health care facilities are fully operational, and the ratio of doctors to people is one of the lowest in the world, with only 0.6 doctors for every 10,000 people.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is committed to providing medical care to people in CAR and more than 70 countries around the world who otherwise would not be able to access it. Health care should not be a luxury but it remains out of reach for millions of people worldwide—including Nadia and Guy:

“He's a type 1 diabetic, and no one at home can treat him. The first time he had an attack, he fell into a coma, and I came here. MSF treated him and gave me insulin to take to the hospital near my home, but when I got there, they refused because they wanted me to pay.” —Nadia Sasango, Central African Republic (CAR). It was Nadia Sasango’s second time at Bangassou regional hospital in Mbomou prefecture, CAR, with her two sons, four-year-old Guy, and 15-month-old Kaleb. Both times, Guy was in a diabetic coma.

Nadia had to travel more than 60 miles to reach the MSF-supported hospital because the hospitals near her home did not have the insulin needed to treat Guy’s type 1 diabetes. Fortunately, after several weeks of care, Guy was ready to go home. However, because he will need insulin for the rest of his life—which is only available from MSF at Bangassou Hospital—Nadia decided to move her family closer to the hospital to ensure her son has access to care.

Friend, Nadia and Guy’s experience is just one of the countless stories of our patients who would not otherwise have access to care without MSF. Around the world, only half of the people living with type 1 diabetes have access to insulin. MSF teams are working every day to care for patients and ensure they can access the medication they need.
