Constitutional Carry Update

Michigan is in a shrinking minority of states who do not have permitless concealed carry (AKA Constitutional Carry). Permitless concealed carry bills have been introduced in every Michigan legislative session for the past decade. The current legislation is HB 4710 and its companion bills. Enactment of the bills requires a supportive governor and supportive majorities in the Michigan House and Michigan Senate. Currently none of those three conditions exist. The legislation passed the Michigan House of Representatives in June 2017 on a vote of 59-49 but the Michigan Senate refused to take it up due to strong opposition by former Governor Rick Snyder.

From Crime Prevention Research Center:

"On March 7th, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed legislation making South Carolina the 29th state in the nation to adopt Constitutional Carry. As of July 2024, there will be 29 Constitutional Carry states when Louisiana’s law goes into effect, covering 46.8% of Americans (157.6 million) and 67.7% of the country (2.57 million square miles). Our work on Constitutional Carry is available here. North Carolina is likely to be the next state to adopt Constitutional Carry. If so, the percent of the population covered by these laws will cover over half the country (50.1%) with 69.2% of the area."
