Friend —

Right now, I want to talk about the terrifying court ruling on IVF and what we can do about it:

On February 19, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are people and someone can be held liable for destroying them — a ruling that criminalizes in vitro fertilization (IVF). Some IVF clinics in Alabama ceased operations immediately.

Imagine the expectant parents who spent thousands of dollars and put their bodies through intensive treatments — only for a small group of unaccountable men they’ve never met to throw their lives into limbo.

Friend, whether you know it or not, someone in your life is a parent — or was born in the first place — thanks to IVF.

Some Republicans are trying to distance themselves from this ruling. But I have been following the conservative movement's war on abortion rights, women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, and bodily autonomy for nearly my entire life. So please believe me when I say: The hand-wringing is an act. We knew this was coming. It’s all part of the same plan.

The Alabama ruling is proof that they won’t stop at abortion. They’re coming for IVF, contraception, paid family leave, comprehensive sex education, and more.

In the other Washington, Republicans have already shown their true colors, blocking a Senate bill that would have protected IVF.

The goal of the anti-abortion movement is not just to ban abortion. It is to exert maximum control on the lives of women and people who can get pregnant. It is to take the decision of when (or if) to start or expand a family out of our hands and into theirs.

And it’s not lost on me that IVF is one of the few pathways for LGBTQ+ parents to have biological children. Our community has expanded the definition of what a family is and can be. It’s a terrifying prospect for the powerful, conservative men who want to make one kind of family acceptable or even possible.

I’m writing today as a State Senator and a candidate for Congress because on Election Night 2016, I saw where reproductive freedom was headed. And as much as we’ve done here in this Washington to protect those freedoms, we need federal action to codify Roe .

We need bold, immediate action at the federal level. And we can only get that by sending people to Congress who recognize what we’re up against and understand the magnitude of the threat.

In Congress, I will do what I did in the State Senate: Act swiftly and decisively to protect our freedom to live, thrive, and make decisions about our bodies and futures. If you stand with me, please make a contribution of $6 or any amount to our campaign today →
