Puget Sound Energy Selective Veto Action - HB 1589
Position: Selective VETO
Deadline: This Weekend
While the legislative session is officially closed, there is still time to take one more critical action by advocating Governor Inslee to use his veto powers on a last-minute amendment to an important bill.
HB 1589 was designed to get PSE on the path to decarbonizing its methane gas pipeline infrastructure! But now this amendment will give corporate handouts at the expense of everyday Washingtonians, weakening this important climate policy.
Our partners at Sierra Club WA organized and delivered a powerful letter to Inslee against this last-minute amendment. We've made huge wins for electrification this legislative season, but this last-second bill amendment removed a critical piece of the bill.
Please send a message to Governor Inslee to veto Section 7 of HB 1589. Urge him to do the right thing by stopping this giveaway to Washington’s largest privately owned utility!
We need Gov. Inslee to understand that this bill was heading in the right direction, but we cannot support this amendment, Here’s a line from Sierra Club WA’s letter to the Governor
“The undersigned organizations are writing to request that you selectively veto Section 7 of House Bill 1589, the Puget Sound Energy (PSE) Decarbonization Bill. While many of our organizations have supported various iterations of this bill in both this legislative session and last, we feel that the final bill does not balance the significant incentives offered to PSE with key provisions to direct the utility to retire its existing gas infrastructure, protect ratepayers, and help Washington State meet its climate goals.”
We are following the lead of Sierra Club WA on this action.

Join Seattle Cruise Control, Climate Action Families, and
Extinction Rebellion Seattle on Saturday April 6th to demonstrate against the
opening of the Seattle-Alaska cruise season! Help protect the people and planet we love
from the harms of cruise ships with a rally at Pier 66 from 10am - 12pm. We’ll
have lots of art, chants, fliers, and music. The event will feature a press
conference led by young
people dressed as sea creature characters - introducing The Walrax! along with
Doctor Dolphin and a Worker Whale - who will speak in Dr Seuss-style rhymes
about how cruise ships pollute our waters, poison our air, endanger our health,
jeopardize our climate, exploit onboard workers, and overwhelm destination
communities.
