Here are some interesting lesser-known facts about St. Patrick.

• St. Patrick wasn't Irish.
• Slavery was what brought St. Patrick to Ireland.
• St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity while preaching. A fourth leaf is where we get luck.
• St. Patrick wore blue, not green.
• St. Patrick probably didn't drive all the snakes out of Ireland.
• St. Patrick's wasn’t his given name.
• St Patrick's Day is held on the day he passed away.
• St. Patrick isn't technically a saint.
• The tradition of drinking to celebrate St. Patrick's Day is said to have started with the saint himself, who announced that everybody should have a drop of the hard stuff after an innkeeper was less than forthcoming with a bottle of whiskey. 

Regardless of the real history, St. Patrick lived a fascinating life and today's holiday is a welcome sign of spring. To all who celebrate or those with Irish heritage, we wish you a very happy St. Patrick's Day.
