Elon Musk keeps spreading a very specific kind of racism
While it's been an open secret for a while that Elon Musk is a white supremacist, he's been using his Twitter account to push a very pernicious, specific brand of racism — that of "race science," using cherry-picked and misleading data to argue that minorities, especially Black people, are biologically inferior to whites. You may recall that a certain guy named Adolf Hitler was a huge fan of this stuff. It's especially dangerous because the false trappings of data-driven analysis lend it an air of credibility that your sewer variety racism doesn't have. Musk's disturbing inclinations towards race and eugenics are well-documented at this point; the number of children he has (11!) is driven by the delusion that the human population is being overtaken by "lesser minds" (read: non-white brains) and that "underpopulation" (of white people) is the biggest threat facing human civilization (and not, say, the climate crisis that his rockets fuel). Pretty cool that this guy has more money than God and also personally controls the United States' space program.

"We don’t know where the money is going": The "carbon cowboys" making millions from credit schemes
Carbon credits have largely been debunked as a largely ineffective scam that allows companies to greenwash their business practices and publicly pretend like they're actually doing something to stop climate change. So it's unsurprising to learn that carbon credit programs designed to transfer climate finance to the developing world, which suffers all the consequences of climate pollution with little of the benefits, don't work either. The Lake Kariba conservation project in Zimbabwe, managed by the Carbon Green Investments (CGI) company, has generated more than €100 million in revenue, but ten years on almost none of that has actually gone to the villages surrounding the lake like as originally intended. “We hear reports that the company has been making lots of money, but we do not know where this money is going. The community is complaining because they are not seeing money trickle down,” says local forest ranger Rogers Kavura. Only €14 million have gone to Kariba's communities, while €86 million have been inhaled by CGI and its broker South Pole for "fees and expenses."

Ignorance and democracy: Capitalism's long war against higher education
David Masciotra, writing for Salon, is sounding the alarm about the future of liberal arts and its consequences for our democracy as higher education institutions take an axe to their liberal arts programs like English and history. "Time and again, college and university leaders across the country have cited financial justification and a business-model imperative for transforming their institutions into glorified vocational schools. And this wrecking-ball campaign runs in parallel with an ideologically motivated war on learning," writes Masciotra, illustrating how the right-wing war against "diversity, equity, and inclusion" (DEI) programs and their hostility to higher education in general combined with the pressures of capitalism to only study subjects that have a practical application in the job market — i.e., skills that serve the needs of capital — is resulting in Americans embracing the idea of ignorance as a virtue.
