Today I want to tell you about my brother David and his impact on my life.

David was born 10 weeks premature and spent the first two years of his life in and out of hospitals. We are so incredibly thankful to the doctors and nurses who supported our family and helped him have a full recovery.

Afterwards, my parents received a medical bill over 100 pages long. If it weren’t for my dad’s health insurance, we would have been in huge trouble.

When I saw my Republican Congressman vote to take away healthcare from people like my brother, I knew I had to do something about it. So I decided to run against that Republican in 2018. And in a surprise victory, I won.

Now I have the opportunity to fight for kids and families in our exact situation. Just this year, I was able to secure $4 million for St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton so we can expand care for parents and their babies. I’m really excited about this because it’s going to double the number of pediatric beds and make sure every kid can get the healthcare they need.

This is why I do this work, because it matters. As for David, he graduated from Stan State and he’s doing great!
