Today Mayor Ted Wheeler and other Portland officials announced $2 million program for coronavirus-impacted small businesses and plans to give around 2,000 low-income households up to $500 in cash assistance.
The people of Portland are looking to our Mayor and city leaders during this time of crisis, and time and again we have been let down by those leaders who have acted too slow, and have not been bold enough in their actions to ensure the continued safety and prosperity of our city. Now more than ever we need real leadership, and Mayor Wheeler is not providing it.
This stimulus is only a drop in the bucket compared to the actual need that the people of this city are experiencing. A $500 check is not even enough to cover half of the month’s rent, let alone buy food, pay for transportation and utilities, or cover the costs of health insurance for a family. Not only is the dollar amount itself too low, but the payments are limited to only 2,000 households! This leaves out tens if not hundreds of thousands of people in our city who low-income, unemployed, or otherwise struggling financially during this crisis.
That's why my campaign and our supporters are demanding that our city council immediately pass a stimulus bill for direct cash assistance of $1,000 for all Portland residents who are currently unemployed or who make less than $75k per year.
We also recognize that even this is not enough when we are faced with months of social distancing and economic slowdown. That’s why after that better stimulus bill is passed, we demand that our city council take a hard look at our budget and figure out a way to make these payments monthly for as long as possible if not until the end of this pandemic crisis.
