We need to talk about laws that require gun owners to safely store their firearms and prevent kids from getting their hands on them.
Too many children and teens are killed unintentionally or in moments of crisis because unsecured guns are accessible in their homes.
That's why we're calling on Congress to urgently pass nationwide safe storage requirements and child access prevention (CAP) laws. These policies are proven to protect kids by stopping them from accessing firearms in the first place.
Safe storage laws set standards for locking devices and secure storage to prevent child and youth access to guns in homes. CAP laws also hold adults accountable if a child gains access to their firearm.
This is really important, John, which is why we’re proud the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention has already taken action on this. But the executive branch can only do so much on its own. Congress must act.

The facts on safe storage speak for themselves:
>>About 74% of school shooters get their guns from an unsecured weapon at their home or that of a friend or relative
>>In states with CAP laws, accidental child gun injuries and deaths decreased by 85%
>>Safe storage requirements have been shown to reduce gun suicides and unintended shootings
We cannot accept a reality where children's lives are put at risk due to irresponsible gun storage. That's why we're demanding Congress take action NOW on universal safe storage standards and child access prevention laws.
