Just two weeks after progressive candidates for district attorney and prosecutor defeated more conservative, anti-reform candidates in Texas and California, progressives in Illinois and Ohio are looking to build on the momentum.
Ever since progressives started winning District Attorney and Prosecutor races, right-wing interests and dark money groups have been trying to oust progressives who get elected, undermine their power, and block us from any further gains.
On Tuesday, three PCCC-endorsed candidates are facing tough, but winnable, elections. This weekend is crucial – candidates will put donations to immediate use getting their message in front of voters and bolstering Get Out The Vote efforts.
- Clayton Harris is running for State’s Attorney in Cook County, IL, the second largest prosecutorial office in the nation. His race is an uphill battle, and his opponent is supported by far-right special interests.
- Matthew Ahn is running for Prosecutor in Cuyahoga County, OH, where the incumbent’s prosecution has resulted in more death sentences than any other county in the United States.
- Shayla Favor is running for Prosecutor in Franklin County, OH, where a "tough-on-crime" Republican held the office until just 4 years ago.
Last week, progressive PCCC candidate Sean Teare defeated incumbent Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg, who has opposed cash bail reform and whose policies have led to crowded jails.
Also in Texas, progressive Travis County District Attorney José Garza defeated a dark money-fueled challenge from the right.
In California, the AP reports that "One of the country’s most progressive prosecutors, George Gascón, has advanced to a runoff in his reelection bid for Los Angeles County’s district attorney, surviving a primary race that pit him against 11 challengers."
Criminal justice reform candidates are winning all over the country, and on Tuesday we have the chance to elect 3 more progressive champions. It’s not too late! Candidates will put donations to work immediately this weekend for their final Get Out The Vote push.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.
