He's been trying to gut Social Security for years. We're going to make sure he never gets the chance. Indivisibles,
Last week, during his State of the Union address, President Biden committed to protecting and investing in Social Security. At the same time, he blasted Trump and Republicans for their plans to slash benefits and raise the retirement age. Of course, Republicans on the House floor didn't enjoy being called out. They booed, jeered, and called Biden a liar. Then, just days later, Trump proved Biden right.
When asked about his plans for Social Security and Medicare, Trump said, "there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting..."1
His campaign rushed to do damage control, but let’s be clear: Trump has been trying to cut Social Security and Medicare for years, and there’s little doubt he’ll do it if Republicans regain power in November.
This is a huge political liability for Trump, but only if voters know about it. Indivisible will be getting the word out from now until Election Day that Trump wants to slash Social Security to pay for more tax cuts for corporations and billionaires. Can you chip in to help us spread the word and elect a Democratic trifecta that will protect Social Security and Medicare?
In case you think we’re exaggerating about Trump’s years-long crusade to cut services Americans have paid into over their entire lives, here are some receipts:
- In 2020, during a Fox Town Hall, a moderator said, "If you don’t cut something in entitlements, you will never really deal with the debt,” to which Trump responded, “Oh, we’ll be cutting.”2
- That same year, at the World Economic Forum, an interviewer asked him, “Will entitlements ever be on your plate?” “At some point they will be,” Trump responded. “At the right time, we will take a look at that. You know, that’s the easiest of all things [to cut].”3
- Every time he slipped up and admitted the truth, Trump has tried to backtrack and claim he would never cut Social Security. But he can't walk away from his record in office: Every budget he proposed as president included hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Social Security and Medicare that would harm millions of retirees and people with disabilities.4
Over the course of the next few months, you'll hear plenty of people -- including Trump -- try to dismiss or downplay the threat he poses to Social Security. But we know the truth, and voters deserve to know too. Through our innovative Neighbor2Neighbor program and other tactics, Indivisibles will be having hundreds of thousands of conversations about the stakes of this election -- including the threat Trump poses to Social Security. You can help us reach more voters by clicking here to pitch in and funding our work.
To be clear, it's not just Trump who's gunning to cut Social Security and Medicare. Republicans in Congress have been trying for decades to slash benefits, raise the retirement age, and privatize these programs. Just last year, the Republican Study Committee (which counts 70% of House Republicans as members) proposed raising the retirement age to 69 and cut $718 billion from Social Security's funding.5
Why do Trump and Congressional Republicans want to cut such a popular program? The truth is Republicans are in a bind. They can't continue to give trillion-dollar tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy and also guarantee Social Security's future. So, no matter how many people depend on Social Security or how popular the program is, when push comes to shove, Republicans are going to stand by their super rich donors. That's why we're fighting not just to defeat Trump but to also build a new Democratic trifecta that will make the wealthy pay their fair share and protect Social Security for generations to come.
President Biden has done a good job laying out the stakes of this election, but he can't do it alone. Help Indivisibles reach voters about the threat MAGA Republicans pose to our democracy, our freedoms, and vital programs we all depend on. And help us make sure they’re defeated this November so they don’t get a chance to lay a finger on Medicare and Social Security.
