Learn more about what my office has been up to this week Dear john, This week is a difficult anniversary for our region as we mark three years since the Atlanta spa shootings in 2021. On Friday, my office attended a remembrance at the state capitol. May we remember the eight lives that were stolen from us by an act of hate, and rededicate ourselves to our responsibility to act; to champion solutions that will save lives. On Wednesday of this week, I joined Senator Jon Ossoff in demanding answers from the state of Georgia about its failure to auto-renew children in Medicaid. Disturbingly, nearly 150,000 Georgia children have been thrown off their health insurance from March 2023 to September 2023. Access to health insurance is vital, and our children deserve better. Also on Wednesday, my colleagues and I called on Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough to address significant concerns my colleagues and I have regarding the Kennedy Amendment in our recent government funding package. The Kennedy Amendment rolls back 30 years of precedent and makes it easier for veterans who are deemed "mentally incompetent" to access firearms. According to VA data, veterans are over 50% more likely to die from suicide than non-veterans. Our veterans served and sacrificed for our nation. In return, we must provide resources and services to keep them safe when they arrive home. You can read more about our efforts by clicking here. My office is still accepting RSVPs for my 2024 Community Violence Intervention briefing! This community event is designed to inform stakeholders about the Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative funding opportunity made possible by the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. I will be joined by representatives from Community Justice, the United States Department of Justice, and Gwinnett County Chairwoman Nicole Hendrickson. This event will take place on Thursday, March 28th at 10:00 am at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center. To RSVP, you must order a free ticket on my Eventbrite page, located here. If you have any questions about this event, please do not hesitate to reach out to my district office by calling (470) 773-6330. I hope to see you there! On Thursday, my office was proud to attend an Open House for the new Corners Outreach Community Center! I was honored to support funding for this project in 2022 with a Community Project Funding appropriations request, and I am thrilled to see how this new facility will transform lives in our community! Congratulations, Corners Outreach! Thank you for taking the time to read this update. It is my honor to serve our community in Congress. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with my office.
