Update: WJP Rule of Law Index 2020 News & Highlights

Launched on March 11, the WJP Rule of Law Index 2020 accelerated a vital and growing conversation about the importance of the rule of law worldwide. As seen in the media mentions below, this discussion and debate is taking place in every corner of the world.

Now, as a spreading pandemic tests our institutions and societies, our work to define and measure the rule of law is more pressing than ever. Rule of law promises to both shape and be shaped by the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic. Core rule of law principles—accountability of both citizens and government, fundamental rights, and open government processes—can play a critical role in a successful response to the COVID-19 crisis. But at the same time, the pandemic poses fresh challenges to these principles, exacerbating division and inequality in our societies and creating opportunities for corruption and abuse of power.

The WJP Rule of Law Index 2020 helps us understand these dynamics and compare rule of law trends and practices in 128 countries and jurisdictions worldwide. It relies on both household and practitioner surveys (including public health experts) to provide independent, original information on rule of law performance over a five-year period. This data is available for free in our downloadable report or new interactive portal, and we believe it will serve as an important source of insight for policymakers, citizens, businesses, and researchers in the coming months and years.
