Legislative Update
Floor Speech [ [link removed] ]
Last night on the House Floor House Republicans made a motion to bring forward two pro-police bills. The first one aimed to raise the crime of illegally purchasing a gun for someone who is prohibited from owning firearms to the level of a felony. This legislation would hold criminals accountable and have a positive impact on reducing gun crimes. Unfortunately, the motion for an urgency was voted down even though this legislature has already agreed to this language in last year?s public safety bill, though it was removed in conference committee. The second bill offered more flexibility for local communities to use their public safety aide money for what they need. Clearly,?I was fired up last night as the majority continues their position of inaction on public safety instead opting for feel-good policies that do nothing but infringe on the rights of law-abiding Minnesotans.

This Saturday is the 10th annual Bowling for the Battle [ [link removed] ] tournament at Echo Lanes in Austin. The bowling kicks off at 2:00 pm along with a silent auction and a bake sale. In the decade of tournaments, they have raised over $400,000 to fight prostate cancer and will be making that number even bigger this weekend! Good luck to all of the teams competing and congratulations on 10 years!

On Wednesday I was joined by Austin Mayor, Steve King, and Brenda Johnson, director of the Southeastern Minnesota League of Municipalities, to present HF 3475. This bill would create a localized training program in southern Minnesota for those seeking the needed licensure for water and wastewater operations. The bill provides funds to Riverland Community College to develop a pathway for water and wastewater operator licensure that would help fill the over 200 job openings in our area. This training program that partners with experts in the field and the local community college is an innovative way to meet a critical need.
A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota, or American Bikers for Awareness, Training, & Education, came by to share the importance of motorcycle safety and the ways we can support the thrilling activity.

SMART Transit provides essential transportation services for Minnesotans in several of our communities. Bus services are a great way for transit to adapt to the needs of a community as they change. We discussed commercial driver's license testing and ways we can make it more accessible to prospective bus drivers and expand the workforce. Vehicle size regulations is another important issue and how smaller ADA-compliant vans could better fit the needs of some of our cities and towns.
