Dear Neighbors,
The Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ)’s redesignation last week by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a Comprehensive Cancer Center is great news for New Jersey. Our country depends on the world-class research and treatment scientists are doing right here in New Jersey, which is why I worked hard to ensure CINJ was officially redesignated.
As the only NCI-Designated Cancer Center in New Jersey, the Rutgers Cancer Institute is essential to the health of the people of our state and the advancement of cancer research nationally. The Center is expected to receive $17.5 million in federal funding over the next 5 years, including $3.5 million in Fiscal Year 2024.
The NCI Cancer Centers Program was created as part of the National Cancer Act of 1971 and is a critical component of the nation’s cancer research efforts. As one of 72 NCI-Designated Cancer Centers nationwide and the only one in New Jersey, CINJ plays a vital role in advancing cancer prevention, research, and treatment in the state and across the country. President Biden’s Budget Request
President Biden released his budget request for next Fiscal Year this week. Budgets are more than numbers and dollars – they are an expression of priorities, choices, and values. This budget proposal makes good on his commitment to grow the middle class from the bottom up and move our country forward. It’s a vision for building a stronger economy with investments to create new, good paying jobs that can’t be shipped overseas, lower health care and prescription drug costs, and boost American manufacturing. It’s a vision for a stronger, better America for everyone.
I’m pleased the President proposed increasing the number of prescription drugs that can be negotiated by Medicare each year. His budget also makes permanent the expanded premium tax credits for Affordable Care Act marketplaces that are helping four in five American families find health insurance for $10 a month or less.
Likewise, I applaud President Biden’s proposal to fully fund the Affordable Connectivity Program. Before this landmark program, the rising costs of internet service prevented millions of Americans from getting the internet connections they need to fully participate in today’s economy. Now this program is helping over 23 million families stay connected, including 338,000 households in New Jersey. While we face an uphill battle to enact these priorities, I remain committed to fighting for the American people and to build on the progress we’ve made. Read more here
