Since I took office, I’ve been focused on lowering costs for Michiganders and ensuring they have access to quality, affordable insurance.
Last week, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) director Anita Fox issued a warning to insurance providers making it clear that price optimization is prohibited under state law.
Price optimization is a discriminatory profit maximization strategy used by insurance providers to charge the highest price that consumers can tolerate. DIFS has reviewed and will continue to regulate rate filings to ensure that price optimization is not occurring in Michigan.
Michigan will keep holding insurance companies accountable with appropriate oversight, so they do not unfairly increase insurance premiums for Michiganders. We will not allow insurers to take advantage of Michiganders.

DIFS will take action against any insurer using price optimization in any form. We will ensure that Michiganders are charged fair prices, and we will keep working together to lower costs.
If you believe your insurance rates are not being properly calculated or are not in compliance with state law, you may contact DIFS to file a complaint about your insurer at 877-999-6442 or online at www.michigan.gov/difs. If you do make a complaint with DIFS, you may follow up with my office and my staff can assist with tracking your complaint. You can reach my office at www.michigan.gov/whitmer/contact
Sincerely,
Gretchen Whitmer
Governor
