Dear Neighbor,

This year, the IRS is piloting a new service so that people can file their taxes for free, directly with the IRS. Direct File is now open 24/7 to all eligible taxpayers. This new service from the IRS will save taxpayers in New York time and money! It is important to act quickly, as filing season ends on April 15th.  

Direct File is available online here: directfile.irs.gov.

Taxpayers can participate if they meet this year’s eligibility requirements. The following tax situations are all supported:

Types of Income: W2 wage income, Social Security, Unemployment, and Interest of $1,500 or less

Types of Credits: Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for Other Dependents

Types of Deductions: Standard Deduction, Student Loan Interest, and Educator Expenses

Direct File works as well on a smartphone as it does on a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer, and it is fully available in English and Spanish.
