Fighting to Preserve Idahoans’ Access to Affordable
Vehicles
Idahoans deserve access to affordable,
reliable vehicles fueled by American-made energy products.
However, the Biden Administration has proposed vehicle and fuel
economy standards that would go too far—restricting affordable
choices for families and pushing our country toward greater dependence
on China. The Administration’s proposals would impose a de
facto electric vehicle (EV) mandate.
To ensure Idahoans can
choose the right vehicle for their financial and driving needs, I have
taken a number of steps to block these EV mandates:
-
Introduced the Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS)
Actto prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
from moving forward with its proposed emissions rule or any future
rules that would limit availability of new motor vehicles based on
that vehicle’s engine type.
- Led a bipartisan, bicameral
letterto the Administration urging it withdraw the EPA’s
proposed rule which would require 67 percent of new light-duty
vehicles and 46 percent of medium-duty vehicles to be electric by
2032.
- Led
120Senate and House colleagues calling on the Biden Administration
to immediately withdraw a National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) proposed rule that would require
automakers to more than double average fleet-wide fuel
economy in less than 10 years, effectively mandating mass
production of EVs.
- RequestedSenate
and House Leadership include language in government funding
legislation to prevent EV mandates.
- Co-sponsored the
Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases
Act, which would prevent the elimination of the sale of
motor vehicles with internal combustion engines.

What Else I Have Been Up To Lately
Work on
behalf of Idahoans continues in the second half of the
118th Congress. A few of my efforts over the last two
months include:
- Sent
a letterand co-sponsored
legislationto provide relief for American farmers
from the unsustainable increases in the Adverse Effect Wage Rate;
- Joined
legislationto require the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to
award waivers for veterans’ health and housing
facilities projects in process before manufacturing and
supply chain laws went into effect, including veterans’ homes in
Lewiston, Boise and Pocatello;
- Pressed for passage
of the Major
Richard Star Actto provide combat-injured veterans with
less than 20 years of military service both military retired pay and
disability compensation earned through their service to our country,
which would benefit hundreds in Idaho;
- Released a bipartisan
planto prevent and mitigate generic drug
shortages;
- Welcomed Idaho
Downwinderadvocate, Tona Henderson, as my guest to the State of
the Union during the same week the Senate passed legislation to expand
and extend the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act by a vote
of 69-30;
- Urgedthe
Administration to increase market access for U.S. agricultural
exports and improve the competitiveness of U.S. products
abroad, following an unacceptable sharp decline in ag exports;
and
- Pushed for passage of bipartisan
legislationthat would implement commonsense, market-driven
policies to increase competition and enhance prescription drug
access and affordability.
