Our nation is in a crisis — COVID-19 is putting lives and livelihoods at risk. From the start, I've said Congress must put people before corporations.
Last Friday, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES Act) was passed by Congress and signed into law.
Here in Massachusetts — and across the country — communities are struggling. Doctors, nurses, mayors are pleading — we need help fast. That’s why my team and I stayed at the table fighting to make the CARES Act stronger, and have been working with every level of government to support our community in this time of crisis.
The bill that passed last week will provide some desperately needed aid to our community health centers and hospitals, and our workers and families during this public health emergency.
But let me be clear, with a two trillion dollar bill, Congress had the chance to fundamentally address the deep inequities in our healthcare and economic system.
We had a chance to make testing and treatment free and accessible for EVERYONE.
We had a chance to ban evictions nationwide and guarantee that people will stay in their homes.
We had a chance to strengthen protections for our immigrant communities.
We had a chance to make unemployment and paid leave truly universal.
We had a chance to cancel student debt.
This bill didn't do that.
We must go further to ensure that every single person in our country has stability in the coming months and in the long term.
Our work is far from over. I'll never stop fighting for those left out and left behind. I see you. I hear you. Your family deserves healthcare and economic justice.
Thank you for making your voice heard,
