[Campaign Update for Filtered Not Bottled]([link removed])
Dear John,
Many American families will soon have their water lines replaced, and we’re calling for proactively distributing filters to protect them from lead while this is happening. Through our [Filtered Not Bottled campaign]([link removed]), we’re urging the government to protect families from lead in their water, and prevent the use of hundreds of billions of single-use plastic bottles.
We launched the campaign in September 2023, when we submitted a[letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency]([link removed]) (EPA) with 22 allied organizations calling on the agency to ensure toxic lead pipes are not replaced with plastic pollution during U.S. Lead Service Line Replacement (LSLR).
Since then, we’ve done a lot. We:
- Launched the [campaign resource hub]([link removed]), including an extensive [advocacy packet]([link removed]) to support local communities.
- Circulated a letter calling on the EPA to require filters, not bottles, currently supported by over 70 organizations.
- Conducted meetings with key legislators and officials in the U.S. Senate, White House, and EPA.
- Produced resources to build public awareness and support, including [videos]([link removed]), [webinars]([link removed]), [blogs]([link removed]), and more.
In November 2023, after nearly two years of advocacy from PPC and other leading experts, the [EPA proposed a rule]([link removed]) that would require filters be made available by water systems with continually high levels of lead. This is a huge win! But our work is not done.
Looking forward, we will continue to advocate for the EPA to include [stronger measures]([link removed]) on filters that are necessary to ensure families have access to drinking water without toxic lead and plastic. In the immediate future, we hope you’ll [join us]([link removed]) on March 28 for our webinar [Filtered Water: Preventing Billions of Plastic Bottles from Flooding U.S. Communities]([link removed]) to learn more.
If you haven’t already, please [sign the petition]([link removed]) and join the thousands of individuals who are advocating with us to ensure families have access to clean water without toxic lead and plastic pollution. Thank you!
Onward,
