Dear Friend,
Since the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling last month, thousands of families have had their life plans thrown into chaos as they have been forced to consider whether in vitro fertilization (IVF) medical procedures will be criminalized. While IVF currently remains legal and available in Illinois, we must continue to work to ensure that a woman's reproductive freedom does not depend on what state she's in.
The availability of IVF has been crucial to millions of American families' decisions about how they can start and grow their families, and Republican lawmakers and right-wing judges have no business taking away that freedom. In Congress, I have cosponsored the Access to Family Building Act to protect IVF access nationwide. I also signed onto a letter urging insurers to cover contraception and birth control, as required by the Affordable Care Act.
Reproductive freedom will continue to be a hard-fought issue in Congress. 195 House Republicans voted against legal contraception. 124 House Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson, cosponsored the Life at Conception Act, which would ban abortion nationwide and further restrict access to IVF. In the Senate, Republicans blocked the Access to Family Building Act, preventing IVF access from being protected by federal law. And, House Republicans voted unanimously against restoring Roe v. Wade.
For the women of this generation and the next, I remain committed to fighting these attacks on reproductive freedom and protecting access to reproductive health care.
Sincerely,
Bill Foster Member of Congress
