Dear John,
As I head to Vienna, Austria, to represent WOLA at the 67th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) next week, I would like to invite you to join us for a number of panel discussions that WOLA and our partners will be sponsoring as CND side events.
We will kick off with a discussion that I will be moderating on the rise of potent synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, that are fueling a devastating overdose crisis in North America. We will address how the international community can promote systemic change that promotes harm reduction and avoids repeating the failed approaches of the “war on drugs.”
Most of these events can be watched live on European time and recordings will be available afterwards. Separately, on March 20 at 5.30pm EDT, WOLA will be co-sponsoring with the Montevideo government a seminar on how Uruguay can prepare to address the risks and harms of the possible emergence of fentanyl. Meanwhile, in Peru WOLA and partners are sounding the alarm on efforts by Congress to weaken the country's judicial and electoral institutions and approve legislation that would lead to impunity for crimes against humanity.
All this and more in this week’s WOLA Weekly. All the best, |

"It is regrettable indeed, because the trial and conviction of Alberto Fujimori was a milestone in global justice and an example of how people of great power, but who have violated human rights, can be brought to justice. What we are seeing is a mockery of the principle of equality before the law and a mockery of the victims.” Jo-Marie Burt, WOLA Senior Fellow
