Andrew Gwynne MP's Weekly Update
View this newsletter online
Hello and welcome to my weekly update!

So there we have it, Rishi Sunak has bottled calling the general election, and is now left squatting in Number 10 with a Conservative Party that is falling apart around him.

The country is crying out for change, but the PM is putting his own career first. It's time he gets some guts, goes to the country, and let the British people have their say.

HIGHLIGHTS
After 14 years of Tory failure, all we got was the dregs from the bottom of the government's empty barrel of ideas.

My response to last week's budget.
The #WASPI women have faced injustice after injustice as the government have sat by with their fingers in their ears.

No more "computer says no" from ministers, we need action now.
Putting money back into the pockets of working people is the right thing to do, but scrapping National Insurance altogether?

 Fiscally irresponsible nonsense.
The Chancellor's proposed NI abolition will cause utter chaos for pensions, and the NHS budget, with working people getting clobbered as a result.

It's time Ministers came clean about how this dangerous proposal will be funded.
Level 2 apprenticeship starts are down 2/3s in the decade to 2023, and young people are missing out on the vital opportunities advanced apprenticeships offer.

Nothing but bluff and bluster from the minister in response.
The sovereignty of Gibraltar cannot be compromised, and we must do all we can to uphold it.

The airport, which doubles as RAF Gibraltar, has a vital role to play in ensuring that fact.
Threats are at the highest since the Cold War and yet the Government is cutting defence funding.

While Russia and China arm up, our Armed Forces will be the smallest since Napoleon.

Even despite “friendly fire” from his own side, this Minister just doesn’t get it.
Where international law is being broken, it is incumbent on ministers to speak out and challenge.

Israel's right to defend itself does not and must not negate this fact.
The first 1001 days from conception to two are absolutely critical to a child's development.

It was a pleasure to share some of my experiences of SureStart, and the wider work being done across Tameside and Stockport, that contributes to the early years agenda.
Puppy smuggling is a vile trade, that does untold harm to innocent animals.

I was proud to join Dogs Trust's calls for firm action to end this shameful practice now.
A pleasure to speak with young carers, supported by Carers Trust, about the need for inclusive and accessible support.

The Young Carers Covenant sets out a clear vision of a future where that support is available for all.
Housing isn't a privilege, it is a basic human right, but it's one young people in particular face immense struggle to get.

Proud to back YMCA's calls to ensure good quality, safe, and secure housing is accessible to every young person.
Andrew in the the media

This week we marked Commonwealth Day, an opportunity for us to come together as a family of nations, and celebrate our shared history, and united future.

2024 also marks the 75th anniversary of the Modern Commonwealth, created to allow for India to move to a republic system, paving the way for modernisation and allowing other states to become republics and rejoin.

The Commonwealth, despite the vast distances between us, and the rich cultural diversity of member states, unites us in a shared vision of development, democracy, and peace.

The past of the Commonwealth is of course rooted in the British Empire, and we should never seek to shy away from difficult conversations about our history.

But it is today a thriving community of nations, working together for the common good.

Whilst some suggest the relevance and impact of the Commonwealth is beginning to wane, if we look around our communities in Greater Manchester, that could not be further from the truth.

We are lucky to live in a richly diverse city, where people with heritage from all around the world have come to settle here, raise a family here, and contribute to the fabric of our communities.

Whether it is Caribbean communities, South-East Asian communities, or African communities, they all play their part in the richness of society and make Manchester, and our own borough of Tameside, the places that they are.

Their very presence here is rooted in the shared history of the Commonwealth, and the continued close ties between the UK and member states ensures positive relationships and ever deepening cultural ties.

Such a part of Mancunian society has our Commonwealth heritage become that it is woven into the very fabric of what makes Greater Manchester great.

Just look at the Curry Mile (or its new rival Stockport Road in Longsight and Levenshulme) as one example.

A rich wealth of cultural diversity that shows the very best of our diverse communities, yet totally interwoven in the fabric of what people think of when they think of Greater Manchester.

Whilst our touchpoints with the Commonwealth as an institution might be rare, the impact it has on our community, and our day to day lives, is very tangible.

I look forward to continuing to engage with and celebrate the rich diversity that the Commonwealth family has brought us and will always be a champion for it.

Tory MPs can roll out the same old nonsense, but facts are facts.

The Chancellor announced a £46 billion unfunded tax cut, it's time they came clean about how it will be paid for.
