Call on MIT to Shut Down the Antisemitic BDS Referendum
Send an email to the administration of MIT to express your profound concern and opposition to the antisemitic schoolwide BDS referendum slated for the ballot on Monday, March 18. The MIT administration must immediately intervene and cancel the referendum to protect Jewish students.
The referendum, advocating for the University to adopt resolutions that include demanding a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, severing research ties with the Israeli military, and expressing solidarity with pro-Hamas student organizers who violated campus rules, represents not only a divisive and detrimental action within the MIT community but also poses significant risks to the standing and reputation of MIT on both the national and international stages.
MIT is currently under a Title VI investigation by the Department of Education. This ongoing scrutiny underlines the critical importance of ensuring that all actions and resolutions adopted by the university are in strict compliance with federal laws and regulations governing educational institutions. The proposed referendum promotes a stance that is discriminatory and biased and risks exacerbating the current investigation, potentially leading to severe consequences for MIT.
The recent testimony by MIT's President before Congress has already placed MIT in a precarious position, attracting negative attention and criticism from lawmakers. The adoption of Referendum #2, which is antisemitic and will put a target on the back of Jewish students, would further damage MIT's reputation, potentially inviting additional scrutiny and criticism from Congress. At a time when antisemitism is already sharply on the rise at MIT, this referendum threatens the Jewish community and MIT's reputation.
Moreover, the cutting of research ties with the Israeli military, as proposed, could hinder valuable research opportunities and collaborations that contribute to the advancement of science and technology globally. It is imperative that academic and research decisions be guided by the principles of academic freedom, scholarly value, and the potential for positive impact, rather than being influenced by political agendas.
Urge the MIT administration to take immediate action by canceling Referendum #2 on the upcoming ballot. It's the least they can do to take a stand against Jew hatred and protect Jewish students from the antisemitism that has permeated the campus.
