Considering a Change? A Career of Service Could Serve You Well.

Trooper at recruit school graduation

Fifty-six members of the 145th Trooper Recruit School began their eighth week of training this week, moving closer toward starting a new career with the Michigan State Police. For some of the recruits, it?s their first profession, maybe even a life-long dream, but what might surprise you is that many people come to policing as a second or third career.

Check out this MSP Newsroom story [ [link removed] ] that highlights the unique paths some of our members have traveled to become MSP troopers.

Celebrating Women?s History Month

In honor of March being Women?s History Month, the MSP thanks the women of our department who protect and serve our communities each day.

In 1967, Tpr. Noreen Hillary and Tpr. Kay Whitfield became the first women to join the enlisted ranks of the MSP, making the MSP one of the first state law enforcement agencies to employ female police officers. These first female troopers were given the rank of ?policewoman,? a title used until 1976, at which time the department discontinued the rank and began using ?trooper? for both male and female enlisted members.

In 2011, Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue ascended to the highest rank in the department, becoming the first female to serve as MSP Director.? She served in this role until her retirement in December 2018.

Today, we have many incredible women who contribute to our department and continue to make history each day. Watch our new Women?s History Month video [ [link removed] ] to hear Lt. Col. Aimee Brimacombe, Sgt. Kristina Droste, Ms. Kayla Wilson and Tpr. Marjorie Phillips, Ret. discuss the unique strengths women bring to policing.

Prepare Now for Severe Weather

Statewide Tornado Drill graphic

Tornadoes are one of nature?s most violent storms. They can cause fatalities and devastate homes, businesses, neighborhoods and towns in seconds.

While tornadoes can occur during any time of the year, they are especially common during the late spring and early summer months. This year, local and state emergency management officials are asking Michiganders to participate in a statewide tornado drill at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20 to test your readiness.

Donate to Survivors of Sexual Assault

Purses with a Purpose Logo

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and for the fourth year in a row, MSP posts statewide are partnering with community organizations to gather new purses filled with comfort items to donate to survivors of sexual assault.

Purses can be donated throughout April and will be turned over to partnering women?s shelters at the end the month.

To find a donation site and see what items are being accepted near you, visit the MSP Community Calendar [ [link removed] ]. Please note additional locations are being added in the upcoming weeks.

Don?t Rely on Luck

If you?re celebrating St. Patrick?s Day this weekend, don?t rely on the ?Luck o? the Irish? to get home safely! The MSP is reminding everyone that responsible celebrations go hand-in-hand with ensuring the safety of yourself and others on the road.

If you?ve been drinking, call a sober friend, rideshare or taxi to get home safely.
