Washington Examiner | Cami Mondeaux

March 11, 2024

The race to replace Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) in the House is expected to be one of the most competitive elections of the 2024 cycle, and it could come down to which party has the most money to spare.

Republican candidate Tom Barrett leads Democrat Curtis Hertel by 7 percentage points, garnering 44% of the vote compared to Hertel's 37%, according to internal polling commissioned by the Barret campaign and obtained by the Washington Examiner. The polling memo shows Barrett holds an advantage over Hertel thanks to stronger name recognition in the district, which he likey accumulated after running against Slotkin in the 2022 midterm elections.

WG Economy: Snickers Fights Back on

President's Claims of Shrinkflation

WG Economy | David Winston

March 13, 2024

The new inflation report showed the Consumer Price Index hovering above 3% (3.2%) for the ninth month in a row, with cumulative food price inflation at 21% since the start of the Biden presidency. From our latest survey for Winning the Issues (February 24-25), people judge the state of inflation by the prices of items they regularly buy such as groceries and gas (82%) over the CPI, government statistics, and economic news (13%). It is no surprise the President is searching for an answer on high food prices going into his re-election campaign.

The President's State of the Union address targeted "shrinkflation" as a cause of high food prices, accusing companies of deceptive pricing and reducing the size of products without a cost reduction: "Snack companies think you won't notice when they charge you just as much for the same size bag but with fewer chips in it... You get charged the same amount and you got about 10% fewer Snickers in it."

WG Discussion Points: WH Goes After Shrinkflation As Solution For Food Prices

WG Discussion Points| David Winston

March 8, 2024

In last night's State of the Union address, we heard President Biden talk about food prices and "shrinkflation." The White House has been unable to convince voters that ifnation is getting better. By a very large margin, voters determine the state of inflation by the prices of items they regularly buy such as groceries and gas (82%) more than the CPI, government sources and financial news (13%). Food prices are among the most difficult household expenses, and the Biden campaign seems to realize this is a big problem. Based on the latest CPI report, food costs have increased 20.8% since the start of the biden presidency. As shown in our trend chart, the cumulative weekly wage increase is 12.8% - meaning that weekly wages have lagged 8% behind the increased cumulative food prices.
