As AI technology sharpens, deepfake images and videos have become more realistic — and more commonplace — in our daily lives.
Studies show that nearly 96% of deepfake videos contain pornographic imagery of women — all of which is created non-consensually.1
So Alexandria worked closely with abuse survivors to introduce the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits (DEFIANCE) Act of 2024. If passed, victims could sue anyone who ‘knew or recklessly disregarded’ their consent when they created, shared, or received the deepfake pornography.
Alexandria put it simply: “How we answer these questions is going to shape how all of us live as a society for decades.”
The DEFIANCE Act would amend the Violence Against Women Act, and has been endorsed by more than 20 organizations, including the National Women’s Law Center, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and the Sexual Violence Prevention Association.
Just last month, Alexandria was named to the bipartisan House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, where she will work to optimize AI innovation, while protecting the country from emerging threats in the new technology.
Alexandria has been the target of disturbing online harassment for years, but isn’t afraid to hold those causing harm to account.
