Hi John,
I’m Emma, a 16-year-old Sunrise organizer in Boulder, CO. Last fall, my hub won the first Green New Deal for Schools Resolution in the country. Since then, two more schools have won, and campaigns are gaining momentum in dozens of cities and towns. I’m feeling really excited about where we’re going.
I want to share a little about the support we got that helped us run a powerful, successful campaign that won in less than a year:
A little over a year ago, I flew to Philadelphia for a training session with two dozen high school students to discuss launching the Green New Deal for Schools.
In August, I trained at a week-long ‘summer camp’ in rural Illinois, where hundreds of students learned how to launch and run campaigns. Summer Camp energized people at my school and dozens of other schools to get started.
We kicked off our campaign in September. Adah and Audrey, Sunrise organizers, coached and trained me on Zoom, helping us craft our strategy and overcome challenges.
On November 28th, we won!!
I’m excited to see more students around the country keep winning a Green New Deal for Schools. We all deserve schools that are safe places to learn and don’t contribute to the climate crisis. We deserve schools where everyone has access to free, healthy lunches, where our classes tell the truth about the climate crisis, and where we have pathways to green jobs.
To keep up the momentum, we’ve got to keep up the training. If you can, please chip in to help us train and coach students like me to win the kind of schools we need.
Thank you,
Emma
