Dear John,
One phase of the campaign is over and another now begins.
We have a bigger job on our hands than just defeating Donald Trump; we must deal with the larger threat of Trumpism and its anti-democratic fervor. That will be achieved not just with political strategy but with psychological perspicacity, as we override the call of cult leader with a call to the better angels of our nature. We must respond to his lies with the truth of who we are.

To win the election we must win the hearts and minds of the American people. To those who ask what psychological, emotional or spiritual power has to do with winning an election, the answer is “Everything.” If people don’t feel that voting for a candidate will help their lives be better, then they will not show up for that person on election day. We must offer the American people a transformational vision of what is possible in their lives.
At its best, the Democratic Party has stood for the unequivocal advocacy for the working people of the United States. That is the moral basis for both its power and popularity.
But just as an individual needs to look in the mirror sometimes and ask, “Am I truly who I say I am? Do I live the principles on which I say I stand?”, so does a business, a group, or even a country. The Democratic Party must return to its traditional principle of putting the safety, health and well-being of the average American above any other value no matter what, or November will be a rude awakening.
That is why we need an Economic Bill of Rights.
We should stand for Medicare for All - because one in four Americans live with medical debt and 75-90 people are underinsured or uninsured.
We should stand for a guaranteed living wage - because 39% of Americans report skipping meals in order to pay their rent and millions of people are selling their blood plasma in order to pay their bills.
Our message should be one of fundamental economic reform, not just “We made it somewhat better.”

There is ubiquitous economic despair in America, and the person who wins will be the person voters feel might truly make it better.
I’m still in the race to make that point to as many people as possible. TV ads alone will not win this election; only a genuine, heartfelt response to the suffering of millions will do that.
