Legislative Updates

Last week, I was proud to introduce Senate Bills 741-743 with my colleague Senator Rosemary Bayer. These bills would require every school to have a library staffed by a certified school librarian.

This is an issue I’ve been working on for years, and equity for school libraries and librarians remains an issue in our state. Michigan is 46th in the nation in school library staffing and our reading scores remain low. I believe that all students deserve a place to explore new books that are aligned to their grade and reading levels, as well as access to a trained professional school librarian who can help them with building research skills and more.

Community Updates

Happy March is Reading Month! As a former teacher, meeting with students is one of my favorite parts of my job. Last Monday, I was excited to stop by Hale Creek and Eureka Heights Elementary Schools where I was able to talk to students about being a State Senator and read The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors to their third grade classes while also meeting some amazing educators.

Last Friday, I was honored to join the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan to celebrate the announcement of their return to Van Buren Township. This organization does so much to support our youth across Western Wayne and beyond, and I was proud to be able to help make their return possible by supporting them with funding in last year’s school budget. It was great to stand beside Shawn Wilson, the CEO and President of Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, and hear from so many voices across our community about how much this organization means to them.

I thank you for taking the time to stay engaged with our office. If you have any questions or comments on legislation, community issues, or any matter that is important to you please feel free to reach out to my office here

As an elected representative, I believe in being readily available and transparent because my office is your office.
