Here’s a subject line we don’t want to write after this year’s election: What do Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, and Joe Biden have in common? They won the popular vote but did not walk (back) into the White House as President of the United States. This could be our reality. Thanks to the outdated Electoral College, we could end 2024 with a new president that didn’t win the majority of votes cast. It happened twice in 2000 and 2016. It almost happened again in 2020 when Donald Trump tried to steal the presidency through his fake electors scheme. Our presidential elections don’t have to be this way. There is a way for the people to circumvent the antiquated Electoral College system by passing the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact in states across the country. Just this week, Maine’s legislature voted to join the 16 other states (plus D.C.!) that are already part of the compact, bringing us one step closer to electing the President by National Popular Vote. learn moreThanks for all that you do.
