Private Equity Market Penetration

In the new March issue of Health Affairs, Ola Abdelhadi of the University of California Berkeley and coauthors examine trends in private equity (PE) acquisitions of physician practices between 2012–21 ([link removed] ) and related impacts on local market shares.

They find substantial increases in PE ownership of physician practices during the study period, with PE now controlling a significant share of physician practice specialties.

The authors find that PE firms collectively held more than a 50 percent market share in sixty Metropolitan Statistical Areas.
