The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a sweeping suspension of its enforcement of environmental safeguards last week. While it pegged this directive to the global COVID-19 pandemic, it’s right in line with the agency’s nearly four years of giveaways to corporate polluters and weakening environmental regulations.
Fortunately, our nation’s laws allow for citizen lawsuits against companies that pollute our water: When the government refuses to act, we will.
Our movement started when fishermen on the Hudson banded together to sue polluters under a little-known 19th Century law. With the 1972 passage of the Clean Water Act and the growth of our movement, we’ve filed lawsuits all over the United States.
The current EPA has made it clear that when polluters stand up, it will stand down. Waterkeeper Alliance has always stood up for clean water, and nothing will change that.
We need your support to continue to do the work EPA has abdicated. There’s a couple of ways you can help us win this fight:
Donate today: Your gift will get put to immediate use protecting everyone’s right to clean water. You can also sign up to become a monthly donor, one of the most important ways to give!
Thank you for your continued support of drinkable, fishable, swimmable water.
To clean water,
Marc Yaggi
Executive Director
P.S. - Please note that the CARES Act includes a new above-the-line deduction for total charitable contributions of up to $300 in 2020, and lifts the existing cap on annual contributions for those who itemize, raising it from 60 percent of adjusted gross income to 100 percent.
