Dear John,

Moments ago, the Georgia House of Representatives passed a bill that establishes the first ESA in the Peach State, the Georgia Promise Scholarship. This action is the culmination of more than 10 years of relentless advocacy by GeorgiaCAN and its partners.

SB 233 now returns to the Senate, which passed the legislation last year, for their agreement. Once agreed to, the bill will be sent to Governor Kemp, who has already voiced his strong support for the measure.

The legislation will establish an ESA accessible to students in low-performing schools. If fully funded, the Promise Scholarship Act will provide tens of thousands of children and families an immediate option to find the education that’s right for them.

The Georgia ESA passes the House on a 91-82 vote.

“The passage of this bill in the House has been a decade in the making,” said Michael O’Sullivan, GeorgiaCAN’s executive director. “If passed out of the Senate, this will represent a historic step forward towards a more open and family-centered education system for all in Georgia. Should the program grow in popularity over the coming years, we’ll need even sharper advocacy to grow the ESA in scale and ensure that it endures as state policy for generations to come.”
Earlier today, GeorgiaCAN parent advocate Kelly Fields and student advocate Olivia posed for a photo with Governor Kemp and Georgia’s First Lady, Marty Kemp.

As the bill returns to the Senate, we invite you to stay tuned in to GeorgiaCAN’s social media ([link removed]) and The New Reality Roundup ([link removed]) , where we’ll share further progress as the bill advances toward becoming law.
Best,
