Today marks six years since the ENOUGH National School Walkout.

Here in our Community, students across 30 campuses joined the 1 million-strong demonstration to demand Congress act for school safety and gun control.

The Enough National School Walkout was a direct response to the negligence and apathy shown by federal lawmakers following the Parkland High School shooting that claimed the lives of 17 students and injured 17 more.

That movement continues to this day. We’ve passed reforms for school safety at the council, board, and state levels, but federal inaction continues.

From KIPP Adelante Academy to Santana High to UCSD , thousands of young San Diegans took it upon themselves to act where federal legislators failed.

Six years later, these activists have all graduated and moved on, but their courage, empathy, and leadership live on in our Community. Meanwhile, those in Washington still say “their hands are tied” as 2021 was the most deadly year for mass shootings.
