The Story of Easterseals. Easterseals’ story began in 1919, when Edgar Allen founded an organization for children with disabilities. Before this, there was a lack of access to medical services and children with disabilities were often hidden from public view. In the 1930s, the Great Depression hit the disability community especially hard. But our first mailing stamps (or “seals”) campaign during the Easter holiday was highly successful, and our donors were instrumental in helping raise awareness about disability issues by placing their Easter “seals” on envelopes and letters to show support for our programs. In 1945, we opened our services to adults and WWII veterans during a time when hospital admissions for people with disabilities and people seeking special education classes also doubled. Thanks to the visibility of our campaigns, support for people with disabilities expanded across our country. By 1967, when we officially changed our name to “Easter Seals” (which later changed to “Easterseals”), we were already well known for our life-changing work for people with disabilities, families, and communities. In 1990, our national advocacy efforts and historic public service campaign helped secure the biggest legislative victory for people with disabilities in history: the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Now, in 2024, we’re continuing to serve millions of people with disabilities, veterans, and older Americans every year. Trusted by families for more than a century, we’ve supported awareness initiatives and helped influence cultural perceptions. We’ve helped pass groundbreaking legislation that has transformed our society. We’ve made sure older Americans and veterans who served our country aren’t left behind. We’ve saved lives, improved communities, and changed our country for the better. We’re nowhere near done. More people rely on Easterseals than ever, and we depend on your support.
