Dear Ward 8 Residents,

March brings with it two significant occasions for celebration and reflection: Women's History Month and the beginning of Ramadan.

Women's History Month is a time to honor the remarkable achievements, resilience, and contributions of women throughout history. It's a moment to recognize the trailblazers who have shattered barriers, challenged norms, and paved the way for progress in every sphere of life.

Simultaneously, the commencement of Ramadan marks a period of spiritual devotion, self-reflection, and communal solidarity for our Muslim neighbors.

Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, and acts of charity. It is a time when individuals come together to deepen their connection with their faith and with one another. Let's embrace the values of compassion, empathy, and inclusivity that Ramadan embodies, and extend our support and understanding to those observing this sacred tradition.

In Ward 8, our diversity is our strength, and these two occasions offer us a chance to celebrate the richness of many cultures. As we commemorate these meaningful events, let us also reflect on the progress we've made and the work that still lies ahead in creating a more just, inclusive, and equitable community.

LOOKING BACK TO 2023
Here is how we celebrated Women's Month:
Ward 8 Women's Symposium

Councilmember Trayon White Ward 8 Women's Symposium was a success. The symposium was lined with retail therapy, allowing women to shop till they dropped. Attendees heard from dozens of inspirational speakers and experienced a more intimate setting during the break-out sessions with industry experts.
The District Department of Transportation announces the launch of the highly anticipated District E-Bike Incentive Program that will help District residents purchase an e-bike. Applications are open April 1-April 15.

HumanitiesDC Cycle 2 grant opportunities are now open!
* Capacity Building: ([link removed]) a $25,000 grant to fund capacity building projects for DC-based humanities focused non-profits
* Youth in the Humanities ([link removed]) : a $25,000 grant to fund general operating expenses for DC-based humanities focused non-profits serving young people ages 11 to 24

Applications are due by May 1, 2024 at 5:59 pm.
Legislative Updates ()

This week, there were no legislative or Committee of the Whole meetings. The Mayor, Muriel Bowser, signed Secure D.C. into law on March 12, 2024. Secure D.C. was unanimously approved by the Council last week, with Councilmember Trayon White voting “present.”

Before signing the package into law, Bowser said she had just received a D.C. police briefing highlighting promising results. For the first two and a half months of this year, Bowser said, “Homicides are down 33%, violent crime is down 14%, property crime is down 12%, and overall crime is down 13%.”

Secure D.C. has caused many organizations and activists to question the provisions as a step away from civil rights.

More Affordable Housing Comes To Ward 8.

Councilmember White joins Mayor Muriel Bowser, Banneker Ventures and community leaders for a ribbon cutting on affordable housing.

The Clara is a new affordable housing complex named in honor of Sister Clara Muhammad, the esteemed First Lady of the Nation of Islam. This 81-unit housing is a testament to our commitment to bring more affordable housing options and a symbol of empowerment and opportunity for the community where families can grow.

Several members of Councilmember Trayon White's team participated in ANC8F's inaugural Navy Yard Neighborhood Meet & Greet at Blue Jacket Brewery this week. The event drew a crowd of 50 residents eager to engage with representatives from various agencies, including the Metropolitan Police Department, Department of Parks and Recreation, the Mayor's Office of Community Relations and Services, among others.
